Due to Alouette-1's launch on September 29, 1962, the science satellite, monitoring ionosphere, marked Canada's entry into the "space race". Other than Russia and America, Canada becomes one of the first nations to create to their own artificial Earth satellite. Initially, it is expected have a one-year design life but is used for 10 years, providing over one million images of the ionosphere (a layer of the earth's atmosphere ionized by solar and cosmic radiation).
